What Is a Passport Photo Maker?
A passport photo maker is a tool that resizes and crops any personal photo to the exact dimensions required by a government authority for a passport, visa, or national ID application. Every country specifies precise requirements โ not just the pixel dimensions, but also the physical print size, the size of the face within the frame, the background color, and even the position of the eyes relative to the top of the image.
Traditional photo studios charge $10โ20 for two passport-size prints. Online services that crop and mail prints add shipping time and cost. This tool lets you crop your photo to the correct dimensions instantly, in your browser, and download a print-ready JPEG at 300 dpi โ all for free, with no upload or account required. You can then print it at any pharmacy or photo lab, or include it in a digital application.
How to Use This Passport Photo Maker
- 1.Click the upload area or drag your photo directly onto it. Any JPG, PNG, HEIC, or WebP photo from your phone or camera will work.
- 2.Choose your country format from the dropdown. The crop preview updates immediately to match the correct aspect ratio for that format.
- 3.Drag the image inside the preview box to center your face. Your head should be upright with the crown near โ but not touching โ the top of the frame.
- 4.Use the Zoom slider to adjust how large your head appears within the crop area. For most passports, the face should fill 65โ80% of the frame height.
- 5.Click "Generate Passport Photo" when you are satisfied with the positioning. A thumbnail appears below with a Download JPEG button.
- 6.Download the JPEG and print it at the exact physical size listed for your country (e.g., 2ร2" for US, 35ร45mm for UK). Most pharmacy photo printers accept the file directly.
Passport Photo Requirements by Country
Passport photo dimensions and face-size rules vary significantly from country to country. Always verify the current requirements with the issuing authority before submitting โ requirements do change, and a rejected photo means starting the application over.
United States โ 2ร2 inches (51ร51mm)
The US Department of State requires a color photo on a plain white or off-white background. The head โ from chin to top of hair โ must measure between 1 inch and 1โ inches (25โ35mm) within the 2-inch frame. Eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera. As of 2016, glasses are not allowed. No hats unless for religious reasons. The photo must have been taken within the last six months.
United Kingdom โ 35ร45mm
UK passport photos must be exactly 35mm wide and 45mm tall. The face must measure 29โ34mm from chin to crown. The background should be plain cream or light grey โ not white. The photo must be printed on high-quality paper with no pixelation, a uniform light intensity, and no shadows. Digital submissions via the Passport Application Checker tool are now accepted.
EU and Schengen Area โ 35ร45mm (ICAO standard)
Most EU member states and Schengen Area countries follow the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) biometric photo standard: 35ร45mm, white or very light background, face centered and covering 70โ80% of the frame height. The exact shade of background can vary โ Germany requires light grey, France allows white, and Spain specifies a white background. Always check the embassy requirements for the specific country.
Canada โ 50ร70mm
Canadian passport photos must be 50mm wide and 70mm tall โ one of the largest standard formats. The face height (chin to crown) must be between 31mm and 36mm. The background must be plain white, and the photo must be clear and well-lit with no harsh shadows. Canada accepts digital photo submissions for online renewal applications.
India โ 2ร2 inches (51ร51mm)
Indian passport photos use the same 2ร2 inch dimension as the US but require a plain white background specifically. The face must be clearly visible with no shadows, and the applicant must look directly at the camera with a neutral expression. Both ears should be visible where possible. The photo must be in color and taken within the last six months.
China Visa โ 33ร48mm
China visa photos require a 33ร48mm format with a white background. The photo must show both ears, a neutral expression, and no glasses. The face must occupy at least 60โ80% of the frame. This format is also used for Chinese ID cards and residence permits, with slight variations in the face proportion requirements.
Australia โ 35ร45mm
Australian passport photos follow the same 35ร45mm ICAO standard as UK and EU photos, but require a white or light grey background. The face must be centered and clearly visible, with eyes open and looking directly at the camera. The photo must be taken within the last six months and show the applicant without heavy makeup, filters, or digital alterations.
Tips for Taking a Good Passport Photo at Home
- Use natural light. Stand near a window with diffused daylight โ overcast skies are ideal. Avoid harsh midday sun or indoor lighting that creates shadows on your face or the background.
- Use a plain white wall as your background. A blank white wall or a sheet of white poster board works well. Make sure there is no visible texture, patterns, or shadows cast on the background.
- Keep the camera at eye level. Prop your phone or camera so the lens is exactly level with your eyes. Shooting from below creates distortion; shooting from above makes the head look smaller than it is.
- Take multiple shots. Take 5โ10 photos at different slight angles. The best passport photo usually isn't the first one โ look for even lighting, a neutral expression, and both eyes fully open.
- Use your phone's portrait mode cautiously. Portrait mode is fine for the photo itself, but avoid heavy AI skin smoothing or background blurring. Passport authorities are trained to spot digitally altered photos.
Common Passport Photo Mistakes to Avoid
Passport applications are rejected for photo issues more than for any other reason. Here are the most common problems and how to avoid them.
- Head too small or too large. The face must occupy a specific proportion of the frame โ usually 65โ80% of the height. Use the zoom slider to adjust carefully.
- Wrong background color. Many countries now reject light grey backgrounds submitted for US applications (which require white) or pure white backgrounds submitted for UK applications (which require cream/light grey). Use the correct shade.
- Head not centered or slightly tilted. The passport photo reviewer looks for the centerline of the face to align vertically. Even a slight tilt can trigger rejection. Drag the image to align your nose with the vertical center of the preview box.
- Printing at the wrong size. A common mistake is letting the printer auto-scale the photo to fill the page. Always set the print dimensions explicitly to the correct passport photo size (e.g., 2ร2" for US).
- Photo taken more than 6 months ago. Most countries require the photo to be recent โ typically within the last six months. Use a current photo every time you apply.
How to Print Your Passport Photo at the Correct Size
Downloading the photo from this tool gives you a JPEG at 300 dpi with the correct pixel dimensions for the selected format. The critical step is printing it at the exact physical size โ not letting the printer software resize it.
- Pharmacy photo kiosks (US). CVS, Walgreens, and Costco all offer photo prints. Select the 4ร6 print size, then explicitly set the photo to print at 2ร2 inches in the top corner. Most kiosks have a "passport size" preset that does this automatically.
- Home printing. Set your printer to print at actual size (100%, no scaling). On Windows: open the JPEG in Photos, click Print, set size to Actual Size. On macOS: open in Preview, File โ Print, select Scale โ 100%.
- Use glossy or matte photo paper. US passport photo requirements specify glossy or matte finish. Inkjet paper is usually acceptable; avoid plain office paper which has a different finish and lower color accuracy.
- Verify the size after printing. Use a ruler to measure the printed photo. It must match the required dimensions exactly โ US passports will be rejected if the photo is even slightly larger or smaller than 2ร2 inches.
